Danish shipping line Maersk have garnered more of a hold on the Middle Eastern market by adding the Iranian port of Bushehr to its comprehensive services.
Bushehr is the largest and most important port for transportation of commercial goods within the Bushehr province in Iran. With a total throughput of 7 million tons, this port is capable of offering services for all containerized cargos, and most significantly refrigerated products. Bushehr is also advantageously located within reasonable shipping distance of ports in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain.
The first direct cargo sailing to Bushehr took place on Wednesday January 4, travelling from Jebel Ali, Dubai to the Iranian port.
Maersk now offer two gateway ports to Iran – the port of Bandar Abbas and the newly acquired port of Bushehr. Maersk Line also operates an office in the capital city of Tehran.
Maersk also recently announced a partnership with e-commerce giant Alibaba that will allow shippers to book space on vessels, entirely online.
