Maasvlakte II at the Port of Rotterdam has welcomed the largest ever vessel call after taking the 18,300 TEU Triple-E Marstal Maersk.
PTI previously reported that Maasvlakte II had taken its first container shipment delivery from a 4,360 TEU Sealand Eagle, which, given the long-awaited Maasvlakte II, was not the ship size the project was commissioned for.
However, accepting a Triple-E remains a strong statement regarding Maasvlakte II’s future.
According to Maasvlakte II’s operator, APM Terminals, the vessel call was part of an initial testing phase that was necessary before weekly calls are scheduled for February, 2015.
APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has been designed to be the world’s safest, most technologically advanced and automated container handling facility, and began landside commercial operations with the opening of the truck gates in December, 2014.
A recent signing of a two-year contract for environmentally-sustainable wind-generated electricity reflects Maasvlakte’s ambition for sustainability.
Electricity will be used to drive virtually all terminal equipment at Maasvlakte II.
