ScheldtRhine Crash

An inland barge has collided with a bridge on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal near Rilland, the Netherlands.

A social media video posted by journalist Lisa Konings and taken via Maikel Sebregts depicts a Dutch inland vessel’s wheelhouse colliding with the bridge in the Zeeland region.

A second video posted by Konings notes that no one was injured in the collision but films the wheelhouse completely destroyed.

According to the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), the damage to the Bath bridge is minor.

Shipping was not affected by the accident.

The inland vessel is the 135 meters long and about 18 meters wide.

The ship sails under the Dutch flag and was en route from Antwerp.

Barge transport in the European Rhine River is becoming a “critical” situation as water levels continue to drop.
