A two-part infographic released by Information Sharing Centre, ReCaap, shows the increase in piracy numbers over 2014, with at least one incident reported each month between January-June, 2015.

In a previous article by PTI, it was reported that the number of incidents in Asia had increased by 33 to a total of 183 in 2014.

The International Maritime Bureau previously said that armed thieves were attacking small tankers for oil and diesel gas.

In the infographic the carriers that are most affected by maritime piracy are the product tankers. The most incidents have involved up to nine gang members, who have seized the ship for its goods.

ReCaap concluces that greater efforts need to be made by authorities and those in the maritime community to ensure that responses are effective in helping victim ships.
