The Incheon Port Authority has announced a new monthly cargo handling record, with 251,000 TEUs passing through the port in October 2016.
This beats the previous records of 220,000 TEUs in April and 230,000 TEUs in July 2016 and represents a 17.2% increase over October 2015, when 214,500 TEUs were handled.
The total number of containers handled so far in 2016 stood at 2.16 million at the end of October, up 10.8% over the same period last year.
Much of the increase came from rising traffic to and from China, and Vietnam, which rose 17.9% and 26.8% respectively.
Incheon’s success comes as neighbouring Busan port, the fifth largest in the world, posted much slower volume growth due to loss of up to 10% of its business from the collapse of Hanjin Shipping.
Incheon, however, remains some way behind busan in terms of overall volume handled.
