The Port of Rotterdam has released a new video that shows Maersk embarking on its historic eco-friendly voyage to Shanghai.

Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping line, recently launched a vessel powered by a cooking oil-based biofuel, as part of an initiative with Shell, Heineken, Unilever and a coalition of other Dutch industry giants.

A recent Port Technology technical paper explored eco-efficiency in port and terminal operations

The project, which PTI reported on when it was initiated on March 22, 2019, is the largest shipping sustainability project in the world and will see the ‘Mette Maersk’, a large triple-E vessel save approximately 1.5 million kilograms of CO2 during its journey.

On its return to Rotterdam, scheduled for June, the results will be analyzed and all parties will look to identify other future actions to decarbonize ocean shipping.
