The world's largest ship, the CSCL Globe, has arrived in Britain for the first time.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the ship docked at the Port of Felixstowe after the megaship left Shanghai on its maiden voyage on December 8, 2014, whilst carrying 19,100 containers.

The CSCL Globe will be calling at Hamburg, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge in Belgium before heading back to the Far East.

CEO of Hutchison Ports UK, Clemence Cheng, said: “Globe’s arrival shows how important the UK market is to shipping lines. In the future we are expecting a weekly service by ships of this size on the Asia-Europe loop.”

Mr Cheng added that Felixstowe has the ability to handle bigger ships and expects megaships to expand in size.

Cheng said: “We know what our customers are planning and are investing to meet that demand. We are gearing up to handle vessels of a different scale.

“Plans are rumoured to be on the drawing board for ships that can carry 22,000 or even 24,000 containers but the only real restriction is the Strait of Malacca.”

The Globe will not keep its title for long however, with the MSC Oscar, with a capacity of 19,224 TEU, set to break the world’s largest ship record when it comes into operation later this year.

CSCL are also said to be planning the acquisition of 24,000 TEU vessels once they are available to market, in a bid to boost its fleet.
