Damen has announced ‘The Optima’, a new propeller nozzle developed by its subsidiary, Damen Marine Components (DMC)..

With the design of the new propeller nozzle, Damen aims to benefit the North American inland shipping sector, more than others developed by the company.

The increased benefits are due to a higher and longer intake, nozzle, and a propeller positioned just aft of the centre line designed to increase performance, DMC also tailors the propeller frequency specifically for each vessel.

Steef Staal, DMC Managing Director, said:  “Using the Damen Optima has many advantages, and it’s these that we want to pass on to our North American customers.

“Looking at today’s inland shipping operators in Europe, you’ll see that everyone uses a nozzle.”

The dominance of nozzles is mainly due to the use of skew-type propellers, the rounded profile of which successfully addresses the historical problem of sediment and debris blockage.

Steef Staal continues: “The feedback we heard from operators on the subject of thrust, both forward and reverse was very positive.

“This is a very important factor for inland vessel and push boat captains: they need to be able to count on optimum stopping distances. In fact, when you consider performance and stopping distance, the Optima is a world leader.

“It is better in other aspects too: Fuel use and exhaust emissions are decreased; thus reducing fuel costs and improving air quality.”

The Optima Nozzle is just one of many moves by Damen to expand its North American presence, after its opening of its Detroit Office early August 2016.

Mr Staal concludes: “Of course the North American inland shipping sector is a substantial market for Damen. Our new office will allow us to really concentrate on what we do best: listening to, and then acting on, what our customers need.”
