COSCO’s general cargo ship Da Zhi has collided with a ship-to-shore crane while berthing at Abidjan Port on the West African Ivory Coast, according to reports.

Images circulating on the web show the aftermath of the crane collapse as causing crushed containers but reportedly no fatalities or any significant damage to the vessel.

Terminal equipment on Beth 21 has also been damaged and Da Zhi, still shown as being docked at the port as of May 23, 2017, 09:33 UTC, is under inspection after being detained as part of an on-going investigation.

The collision follows another similar incident at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai after a CMA CGM container ship brought down a quay crane.

It was reported yesterday that a pilot with ‘extensive’ knowledge of berthing operations at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port has pointed blame at the terminal operator for the collision.

Port Technology has approached Abidjan Port for further comment.
