COSCO places $2.9 billion order for 24,000 TEU boxships

Stade, Germany – August 24, 2022: Container Ship COSCO SHIPPING SOLAR, built in 2019 and sailing under the flag of Hong Kong on Elbe river heading to Hamburg.

COSCO Shipping Holdings has placed an order for 12 methanol dual-fuel 24,000 TEU boxships for a value of almost $2.9 billion.

The 12 containerships will go to Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) and COSCO Shipping Lines, 7 and 5 ships respectively, with each vessel costing $239.85 million.

On 28 October, OOCL and COSCO SHIPPING’s subsidiaries and Nantong COSCO SHIPPING Chuan Saki and Dalian COSCO Shipping Kawasaki signed the shipbuilding agreement for the vessels.

Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS), a joint venture of COSCO and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, will receive $1.2 billion to deliver five vessels to COSCO Shipping Lines between 2027 and 2028.

OOCL will receive seven ships from Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS), another subsidiary of COSCO and Kawasaki, to the cost of $1.68 billion.

In December last year Maersk unveiled the design of its new 16,000 TEU vessels powered by carbon-neutral methanol.
