Contship Italia sees a total cumulative increase of 919,000 TEUs in 2013 compared to 2012.
Contship Italia Group Maritime Terminals has further consolidated its position in Italy with transhipment activities in the hubs of Gioia Tauro, Cagliari and Tangier achieving constant growth according to figures released by the Group.
2013 saw a total cumulative increase of 919,000 TEUs compared to 2012, the majority being achieved in Tangier.
In total, the Maritime Container Terminal business handled 5.2 million TEUs. In addition, the Group’s results benefitted from a reversal in the volumes at Morocco’s Eurogate Tanger almost doubling the number of TEUs handled and for the first time ever breaking the one million TEU threshold.
Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), the ‘mega hub’ in Gioia Tauro, recorded, for the second consecutive year, a double digit growth.
The Goup says La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) and Terminal Container Ravenna (TCR) benefitted from growth in regional containerised cargo flows.
These were largely export driven but there were also some improvement in imports.
Contship Italia Group Intermodal solutions (operated by Sogemar and Hannibal) achieved a softer full year result.
The Group’s dry port in Milan-Melzo increased its rail activity with over 5,500 trains handled in 2013.
Developments in the rail hub are set to continue in 2014 to further improve rail capacity supporting the competitiveness of both domestic and international rail transport markets.
“2014 will continue to be affected by high level of uncertainty,” said Cecilia Eckelmann-Battistello, Contship Italia group president.
“We are expecting further complex dynamics in the business of our valued clients whose revenues must be restored to sustainable levels in order to safeguard the increasing level of investment.”
