Boluda commences towage operations in Egypt

Boluda Towage has commenced towage operations in the Egyptian Abu Qir’s Container Terminal with three tugs.

The Egyptian Abu Qir’s Container Terminal is a strategic and important connection in the maritime trade routes between Africa, Asia, the Indian Ocean, and Europe.

On 9 January 2024, the first container vessel arrived at the terminal. The tugs VB Amon and VB Horus performed their first assistance in Egypt by welcoming the container vessel Zhong Gu Ji Lin and assisting the vessel to its berthing place at the Abu Qir Container terminal.

A few days later, on 12 January, the tugs welcomed and assisted the second container vessel, Mao Gang Shang Hai into the port.

Boluda Towage has established a dedicated onshore team operating from an office in Abu Qir in support of towage operations in Egypt. At the initial start of towage services in the Port of Abu Qir, Boluda Towage operated a fleet of three powerful tugs with 75 tonnes of bollard pull and firefighting capabilities.

Boluda Towage purchased two of the tractor tugs from Sanmar Shipyards and one ASD tug from Med Marine Shipyards.

Vicente Boluda Fos, President of Boluda Corporación Marítima, stated:Abu Qir is a port in full motion, and the port developments perfectly fit with the ambitions of the Boluda Towage Division.

“The presence in Egypt and the Middle East is a further step towards strengthening and expanding our global activities. We are proud to be part of the developments and that we have been able to respond well to the demands of the port authority and container terminal.”

In May 2023, Damen Shipyards and Boluda Towage joined forces to launch the first newbuild methanol tug in Europe.

More recently, the construction of a new terminal in East Port-Said Port in Egypt, the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, officially commenced.
