The Port of Barcelona has reported a 13% growth in H1, 2016 compared to the same period of 2015, handling more than 1 million TEU since January 2016.
All traffic to the port in H1, 2016 amounted to 24.2 million tonnes, which is a 4% increase on H1, 2015.
Port of Barcelona saw large increases in foreign trade. China, as the main trading partner of Barcelona, had a 10% increase in trade; there was a 28% increase with the United Arab Emirates and India saw 19% growth.
Certain types of cargo also saw a significant increase, with diesel fuel growing the most at 50% up from H1, 2015.
Solid bulk saw a 5% increase with the highest increase being cereal and meal, as well as feed and fodder, both up 32%.
In March 2016, PTI reported that the Port of Barcelona was involved in a $1 billion acquisition plan by APM Terminals of the Spanish company TCB, this aims to result in a 7% increase in throughput for the port.
