APM Terminals (APMT) has said its operations at the Port of Buenos Aires facilitated the first ever containerised shipment of lemons between Argentina and China, a demonstration of its expertise in refrigerated shipping.

In a statement, APMT said a container with 24 tonnes of lemons were shipped on the Maersk Labrea from APMT Buenos Aires to Hong Kong on 30 June 2020.

The terminal operator said it offered exclusive use of its cold-store chamber to facilitate the export, as well as the guidance of its specialist staff.

The landmark shipment demonstrates the growth of both the containerised shipping market between South America and China and the refrigerated shipping sector.

Many of the world’s biggest carriers, ports and terminals have invested heavily in refrigerated containers and space as the demand for perishable goods grows.

A.P. Moeller-Maersk (Maersk), for instance, signed an agreement to provide ZIM with an upgraded refrigerated container fleet to help it meet demand from emerging markets.
