Valenciaport is fitting vertical solar panels to the breakwater of its northern expansion.
The move advances the port’s role in RENEWPORT, the EU-backed initiative driving the clean energy transition at Mediterranean ports.
The contract has been awarded to Pavener Servicios Energéticos S.L. for €169,314 ($195,879), with the installation expected to be completed and operational by September 2026.
Works cover both panel installation and official project signage in line with European Union co-financing requirements.
RENEWPORT launched in January 2024 and is 80 per cent co-financed by the EU through the INTERREG EURO-MED programme under the Greener MED initiative.
The project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of Mediterranean ports by identifying and validating renewable energy solutions, including solar, wind and geothermal, in live port environments.

For Valenciaport, the vertical solar installation represents a practical step in positioning the port as a demonstration site for clean technologies.
The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) is using the project to assess the technical, economic and environmental viability of renewable energy integration into working port infrastructure.
Successful solutions are intended to be replicable at other Mediterranean and European ports.
Beyond physical installation, RENEWPORT is designed to facilitate knowledge transfer among port authorities, terminal operators, energy companies and research institutions.
The APV frames this collaborative dimension as central to accelerating decarbonisation across the wider maritime-port sector.
