Cyber-attacks and data theft is the issue considered most likely to occur in the marine industry within the next 10 years. It is also considered the third-most impactful issue, according to the Global Maritime Issues Monitor 2018. Worryingly, it is also the issue the industry is least well prepared for.

Given these concerns, cyber risk has become a board-level issue, with greater importance placed on mitigating the effects that cyber events could have on a company’s safety, finances, and reputation. The cyber threat landscape is constantly evolving, however. Attack surfaces are broadening, as companies throughout the value chain take increasing advantage of opportunities based on interconnectivity and automation. Constant vigilance is necessary.
