Porto Itapoá has received the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program Gold Seal for the fifth consecutive year, based on an independently verified emissions inventory for 2025, submitted under the 2026 reporting cycle.
The inventory showed carbon intensity fell by 11.7 per cent compared with 2024, from 13.22 to 11.67 tCO2e per TEU handled, a metric tracking greenhouse gas emissions per unit of cargo. The figures suggest the terminal’s emissions intensity has fallen even as throughput has increased.
Ricardo Arten, CEO, Porto Itapoá, said: “By accurately measuring where our emissions occur, we are able to direct investments, set priorities, and monitor our progress year after year. Receiving the Gold Seal for the fifth consecutive year confirms the consistency of this work.”
Total emissions for the period reached 23,217 tCO2e across the three scopes defined by the GHG Protocol. Scope 1 emissions, covering fuel use by equipment and vehicles, made up 62 per cent of the total at 14,462 tCO2e.

Scope 2 emissions, from electricity consumption, accounted for 15 per cent at 3,461 tCO2e, whilst Scope 3 emissions, spanning third-party transport, business travel and waste, made up the remaining 23 per cent at 5,294 tCO2e.
The terminal pointed to its expanding electrified fleet, the use of hybrid RTG cranes and ongoing energy management measures as contributing factors.
It currently operates 27 electric terminal trucks, which it describes as the largest electric fleet of its kind in Brazil, alongside other electric equipment.
Arten said: “Since 2021, Porto Itapoá has increased container throughput by 75.3 per cent. The inventory shows that we are successfully decoupling operational growth from emissions growth through investments in electrification, energy efficiency, and new technologies.”
