Porto Itapoá has earned the ABR-Log certification, granted by Abrapa (the Brazilian Cotton Growers Association).
This recognition places the terminal among the first Brazilian ports to officially join the national cotton traceability and best-practice chain.
The certification confirms that Porto Itapoá meets rigorous standards for infrastructure, safety, social and environmental responsibility, and for best practices in the stuffing and handling of cotton bales.
Developed by Abrapa, ABR-Log (Responsible Brazilian Cotton – Logistics) extends to the logistics sector the principles of the ABR (Responsible Brazilian Cotton) certification, already well established among rural producers.
The programme aims to ensure that the entire journey of cotton, from the farm to export, follows standards of ethics, transparency, and sustainability.
The ABR-Log system is integrated into the Brazilian cotton traceability process. Each bale is identified by a QR Code that provides access to information about its origin, harvest date, producing farm, and ginning unit. With the participation of port terminals, traceability now also includes the logistics and export stages.
Although the Port of Santos remains the leader in cotton exports, Porto Itapoá reached second place in Brazil last year. Up to September this year, the terminal had already handled nearly 3,000 TEUs, a figure six times higher than that recorded in the same period in 2024.
The main destination for cotton cargo passing through Itapoá is the Far East, especially China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, followed by the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, with notable flows to Pakistan, Turkey, and Bangladesh.

“With this certification, Porto Itapoá strengthens its position as a safe, socially responsible environment committed to quality throughout the logistics chain,” added Kaufmann.
“This reinforces our role as a terminal that combines efficiency and sustainability, aiming to establish definitive corridors for cargo such as cotton via Itapoá.”
Earlier this summer, Porto Itapoá completed the first stage of a multi-phase implementation of the RTG-Optimization (RTG-O) module within its Kaleris N4 terminal operating system.
