Port of Tarragona secures first EcoPorts certification
The Port of Tarragona has achieved its first Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification under the EcoPorts environmental management standard.

A member of the EcoPorts network since 2014, the certification recognises the port’s environmental management practices, including initiatives related to shore power, water conservation, energy efficiency and rail modal shift.

Isabelle Ryckbost, Secretary General of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), said: “I would like to congratulate the Port of Tarragona for its PERS certification but above all for all its efforts towards becoming more sustainable, both through an ambitious OPS development plan, initiatives on water conservation and energy consumption, and their efforts in view of improving the modal shift towards rail.”

Tim Verhoeven, Senior Policy Advisor and EcoPorts Coordinator at ESPO, added: “We congratulate the Port of Tarragona on achieving its PERS certification. This milestone reflects your strong commitment to sustainability, from advancing decarbonisation and energy efficiency to protecting biodiversity and fostering collaboration through innovative initiatives. Your continuous efforts to improve environmental performance and engage both stakeholders and the wider community truly set an inspiring example for ports across Europe.”

PERS is the only environmental management standard developed specifically for ports. The certification is independently assessed by LRQA Nederland B.V., remains valid for two years and is reassessed to ensure continued compliance.

According to ESPO, the EcoPorts network currently includes 80 ports across 24 countries, with 32 ports holding PERS certification.
