Port of Savannah launches on-terminal cold chain hub
The Port of Savannah has opened a new 4,000 square-foot on-terminal refrigerated inspection facility on 1 July 2026, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) handling operations.

The facility maintains cold chain integrity throughout the clearance process, with 20 refrigerated power plug-ins on exterior walls for reefer containers on chassis.

Specialised infrastructure ensures temperature control, ventilation and cleanliness are maintained at all times.

The new site addresses a fast-growing segment for the GPA. Chilled cargo imports are up 10.5 per cent for the fiscal year to date (July 2025–May 2026), reaching 43,540 TEUs.

The on-port option complements nearly 2.4 million square feet of refrigerated warehousing operated by a dozen Savannah-area businesses, including 1.64 million square feet of frozen storage and over 752,000 square feet of chilled space.

The refrigerated facility forms part of a broader $49.25 million project relocating CBP operations from a 130,000 square-foot site on Garden City Terminal to an adjacent 300,000 square-foot building.

The new complex also includes 400,000 square feet of outdoor inspection parking and accommodates multiple federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) President and CEO Griff Lynch said: “Our on-terminal Customs station supports the expedited handling of perishable cargo. We know it’s important for shippers to get these commodities onto store shelves as quickly as possible while maintaining food safety.”
