The Port of Los Angeles will permanently close part of Avalon Boulevard from 24 April as it advances construction of the Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway Project in Wilmington.
The closure affects a one-block stretch south of Harry Bridges Boulevard to West A Street and forms part of wider landside redevelopment linked to the port’s waterfront infrastructure programme.
To mitigate disruption, traffic will be redirected via the South Wilmington Grade Separation, connecting N. Access Road to Pier A Street, which removes rail crossings and maintains uninterrupted access to port and industrial areas.
Additional access to local facilities, including the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, will be maintained via S. Fries Avenue and alternative routes along Broad Avenue.
The project site spans approximately 12 acres of former industrial land between Harry Bridges Boulevard and the Pacific Harbor Railroad lines.

Once completed, it will deliver a new pedestrian bridge linking surrounding communities to the waterfront, alongside upgraded public access infrastructure.
Planned developments include a landscaped entry plaza, pedestrian pathways, terrace seating areas and supporting amenities such as parking and public facilities.
A 40-foot architectural sundial and heritage-focused features are also included within the design.
Construction follows a groundbreaking ceremony held on 26 February, with completion scheduled for late summer 2028.
The scheme forms part of broader efforts to repurpose underutilised port land, improve connectivity and integrate community-facing infrastructure alongside core port operations.
