The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners announced that it will consider appointing longtime port executive Dr Noel Hacegaba as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Currently Chief Operating Officer, Hacegaba would succeed Mario Cordero, who steps down after steering the port through record cargo growth, major modernisation, and the pandemic.

Harbor Commission President Frank Colonna said: “Noel Hacegaba is the ideal choice to lead the Port of Long Beach. He brings extensive experience managing all key port functions, deep knowledge of the goods movement industry and a collaborative leadership style that will serve the Port well as we navigate future challenges and opportunities.”

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson added that the port is entering a decade defined by climate action, digital transformation and large-scale infrastructure investment.

He stated: “Dr. Hacegaba is well-positioned to guide this next chapter. I support his appointment and look forward to working together to build the port of the future and strengthen Long Beach’s leadership on sustainability and innovation.”

Hacegaba, who has held senior roles for 15 years and now oversees all daily operations, said: “I am honoured and grateful for the opportunity to serve as CEO of the Port of Long Beach. Looking forward to working with our Mayor, Harbor Commission and partners to accelerate our economic engine as we elevate the Port’s profile internationally.”

His record includes negotiating multibillion-dollar terminal transactions, guiding the port through industry upheaval, leading pandemic-era recovery efforts, and launching the Supply Chain Information Highway to improve national freight data sharing.

Beyond the port, he has directed the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility Joint Powers Authority and holds degrees in economics, business administration, planning, and a doctorate in public administration.

In November, the Port of Long Beach moved cargo ahead of its record-setting 2024 pace, driven largely by retailers accelerating shipments and stocking inventories before new tariffs took effect in the spring.
