Pilbara Ports has announced the names of two mobile harbour cranes at Lumsden Point.

The cranes will be called Julie and Arnold, in recognition of local figures Julie Arif and Arnold Carter.

The cranes, currently under construction, will stand 84 metres tall and provide a 400-tonne tandem lifting capacity.

According to Pilbara Ports, the cranes incorporate hybrid technology designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce on-site carbon emissions.

Once operational, the cranes will support the export of battery materials, the import of renewable energy infrastructure, and direct shipping services to the Pilbara.

The Australian Government is contributing $565 million towards common-user port upgrades in the region, including $450 million for Lumsden Point development, while the State Government is providing $96.6 million.

Ports and Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson noted that the project acknowledges individuals who have contributed to the Port Hedland community, and Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel highlighted the opportunity for residents to engage with local infrastructure developments.

Following this, Pilbara Ports completed the majority of inspections at the Port of Dampier and Port of Ashburton after Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle struck the West Pilbara in late March 2026.
