NIB, Port of Klaipėda seal €111 million port upgrade deal
The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) has signed a €55.5 million ($64 million) credit facility with AB Klaipėda State Seaport Authority to co-finance a €111 million ($129 million) infrastructure investment programme at Klaipėda Seaport.

The programme spans a broad range of upgrades, including improvements to navigational infrastructure and port access, modernisation of port authority assets, radar system upgrades, and cyber resilience enhancements.

On the green technology side, the investment covers the deployment of onshore power supply for visiting vessels and the development of Lithuania’s first green hydrogen production and refuelling hub.

The wider programme is intended to support diversification into offshore wind logistics and green energy operations, areas of increasing strategic importance for Baltic ports.

The investment will enable Klaipėda to handle larger vessels, increase cargo handling capacity and improve maritime traffic conditions.

In 2024, the port handled approximately 35 million tonnes of cargo, representing close to 40 per cent of the regional market.

Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, said: “These investments are not only about upgrading infrastructure, they represent a clear step toward the port of the future. Klaipėda Port is consistently strengthening its position as a modern, sustainable, and resilient logistics platform.

“By expanding capacity, deploying green technologies, and enhancing safety, we are building a port that meets today’s challenges and is ready for tomorrow’s opportunities, from growing cargo flows to advancing green energy solutions.”

André Küüsvek, President and CEO of NIB, stated: “Efficient and adaptable infrastructure is essential for ports operating in a changing economic and geopolitical environment. By combining operational efficiency with cleaner technologies, Klaipėda Seaport is enhancing its capacity and advancing more sustainable operations. At the same time, it plays an important role in supporting regional supply chain resilience and maintaining reliable trade links.”

This marks NIB’s sixth financing agreement with Klaipėda State Seaport Authority since 2002, bringing the bank’s cumulative lending to the port to €147.5 million ($171.4 million).
