MSC Gulsun 2

The MSC Gulsun, the world’s biggest containership, has completed its landmark maiden voyage after it arrived in Europe from China, according to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the second biggest container line in the world by market share.

Vessel trackers MarineTraffic shows on its way to the Port of Bremerhaven, Germany after it most recently docked at the Port of Algeciras, Spain.

PTI reported on August 12, 2019, that the vessel, which has a full capacity of 23,756 TEU, had passed through the Suez Canal for the first time after it had already broken the TEU capacity at the Port of the Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia.

Marco Neelsen, CEO at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, will speak at PTI’s Smart Digital Ports of the Future Conference (#SDP19) in Rotterdam between 4-6 November

MSC received it from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in early July 2019, and has described it as setting a “new standard in container shipping, in particular in terms of environmental performance.”

It has more than 2,000 refrigerated containers, which MSC said will boost the trade of food, drink and pharmaceutical products and other chilled items between Asia and Europe.

Furthermore, as MSC prepares foe upcoming IMO regulations on sulphur emissions, the vessel is equipped with a UN-IMO approved hybrid Exhaust Gas Cleaning System and has the option of the switching to low-sulphur fuel or be adapted for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the future.

The sheer size of the vessel is explained by a graphic released by MSC. It is almost 400 meters long, which means on its end it would be taller than the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.

To carry the same amount of TEU, you would need 1,358 airplanes, 44 trains and 14,072 heavy-duty trucks.
