WinGD has announced that it will supply its XDF-M dual-fuel methanol and methanol-ready X-Engine designs for over 30 containerships ordered by a major Taiwanese operator.
The latest order includes 12 methanol-ready X92 engines for a series of 16,000 TEU vessels.
This follows earlier orders for 20 methanol-ready 8,700 TEU ships, of which 14 will feature methanol-ready X82 engines and the remainder X82DF-M methanol-fuelled units.
Following the approval of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Net Zero Framework at that meeting, the operator re-evaluated its strategy, opting for a portfolio of methanol-ready engines, with the potential to run on biodiesel until conversion, in line with earlier methanol-fuelled engine orders.

Volkmar Galke, Director Sales, WinGD, said: “Alongside engine capex and fuel efficiency, owners now need to consider which fuels they can access to in order to reduce IMO compliance costs. Our Taiwanese customer considered its fuelling strategy to reduce costs under the new GFI regime and we are glad that our engines will be part of their winning formula.”
Dominik Schneiter, CEO, WinGD, added: “The customer’s strategy of adopting zero or near-zero emission fuels illustrates the shift that effective regulation can bring and why it is critical that the industry does not lose momentum as the final, crucial elements of the GFI Standard pricing mechanism are decided.”
