WinGD, a Swiss maritime power firm, has launched the option of delivering X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines that may run on liquified petroleum gas (LPG).
The ‘pre-fit’ technology could serve vessels being built for the projected worldwide commerce in ammonia, which will also be capable of transporting LPG.
The X-DF-P system, named after the principal propane component of LPG, will be available for initial engine deliveries in 2027 when operators will likely be evaluating their LPG and ammonia trade balances.
The engine is optimised for ammonia fuel and can run on LPG with simple modifications for future ammonia use.

WinGD Vice President R&D Sebastian Hensel said: “This development highlights our continuous
innovation in support of smarter sustainable ship power solutions.
“Our X-DF-A ammonia engine is already enjoying wide uptake amongst bulk carriers and gas carriers; the X-DF-P offers a valuable intermediate step for gas carrier operators who are keen to participate in the emerging ammonia trade but are uncertain about the timing and impact on vessel engines and fuels.”
The X-DF-P package will also enable operators who currently use ammonia fuel to switch to LPG in the future.
WinGD’s X-DF-A engine has received orders from operators for multi-gas carriers, extremely large gas carriers, and specialized ammonia carriers. Its injection system may be converted to LPG with simple modifications, and the material needs of the two fuels imply that equivalent components can be used for both.
In August, WinGD received its 100th order for Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) technology.
