A video has been released which outlines how the Nicaragua Canal will operate after it has been completed around the anticipated completion date 2020.

The prospective canal will stretch 278km and will vary in width from 230m to 520m. It is also planned to be will be 27.6m deep, according to Malay Mail Online.

The finished Nicaragua Canal will be 3.5 times larger than the Panama Canal, which is anticipated to be completed by 2016.

Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co (HKND) is developing the project that is expected to cost around US$50 billion to complete.

The canal is anticipated to generate an annual revenue of at least $5.5 billion and the planners are hoping it will accommodate 4.5% of the world’s cargo shipping traffic.

Construction of the canal will begin on December 22, 2014 and will take approximately five years to complete.
