With the first 12 speakers confirmed for the Container Terminal Automation Conference (CTAC) 2020 the PTI team has explored some key themes and new topics the event will cover.
First, DP World discusses its new joint-venture with SMS group, known as BOXBAY, which looks to offer improved operations and container terminals for storage and handling by means of High Bay Storage (HBS).
Ronald van der Meer, Project Director, HBS, Global Operations & Engineering, DP World will provide an overview of BOXBAY and how it places each container in an individual rack. With accessibility one of the key drivers for these type of technology BOXBAY says it can make each container individually accessible and can stack as high as 11 tiers.
BOXBAY was launched in April 2019 so a year on from the inauguration of this concept van der Meer will be able to provide lessons learned and successes.
In addition, DP World’s Que Tran, Head of IT, Europe & Russia will discuss long-term strategies for terminal executives to consider. One of DP World’s flagship’s efforts has been the development of the London Gateway Terminal, which sees a fully integrated logistics hub and deep-sea port developed from the ground-up.
Of note, Tran spoke to the attendees at Smart Digital Ports of the Future 2019 in Rotterdam and was among the top rated speakers according to a participant’s survey.
Delving further into the world of automation CTAC 2020 will host a debate on the issue of automation.
Lars Jensen, CEO, SeaIntelligence Consulting and Wolfgang Lehmacher, WEF Expert, World Economic Forum Network, will discuss the pros and cons of automation in the port and shipping world.
It is clear the use of automation is an unavoidable reality in today’s world, and some have implemented the new technology relatively successfully, while others have somewhat failed at the attempt. CTAC looks to explain some of the concerns that surround the use of automation and how, when done well, it revolutionises terminal operations.
CTAC will also be bringing several new agenda items including a C-Level panel on terminal automation with Richard Ballantyne, CEO, British Ports Association.
With automation comes data and with data comes big data. CTAC’s headline sponsor, Navis, provides insight on how to harness and action information gathered.
Chuck Schneider, VP & General Manager, EMEA explains how large, diverse data sets can be beneficial to terminal operators. Big data is here and its here to stay across so many industries, it is now imperative that the port and shipping industry use it to its full potential.
