Westports breaks container handling record

Westports Holdings Berhad’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Westports), has said it has achieved a new container volume record by handling 23,183 TEU in a single vessel.

The terminal operator said the record was made during the call of the CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery to Westports Malaysia between 4 and 6 November 2020 during her regular eastbound FAL 1 service, which connects Asia to Northern Europe.

Westports deployed nine ship-to-shore (STS) Cranes to perform the feat on the 400m long vessel and said its team worked around the clock and achieved extremely high overall vessel productivity levels by attaining 286 Vessel Gross Moves Per Hour (VGMPH) in the 46 hours of operations.

In a statement, Westports said: “The achievement reflects the commitment and dedication of Westports’ staff in planning and carrying out the operations seamlessly for our clients.

“The terminal continues to play its role as the leading and pre-eminent port for the nation’s gateway trade and also as one of the main transhipment hubs in South East Asia for international container shipping alliances.”

The record will be welcome news to Westports after it posted an 11% year-on-year (YoY) drop in revenue during the second quarter of 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
