A video released by the Hamburg Port Authority gives an explanation of the port’s history and strategic geographical location.

Currently, the Port of Hamburg is working on plans to enhance its ‘Smart City’ vision by creating an interconnected network and better traffic management systems.

In the below video, Jorg Pollman, Harbour Master at the Port of Hamburg said that the port is a gateway to the world, having been shaped by tradition and culture.

Hamburg joined the Hanseatic League – a trade alliance – in 1321 and as trade grew, so did the port which is and was known for its beer that is shipped to Scandinavia and Holland. Hamburg had around 500 breweries during this time.

According to Zepol's top 20 US ocean port report, Heineken was one of the leading importers for beer in 2014.
