IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, has released this video message for Day of the Seafarer 2017 to encourage ports and seafarer centres from around the world to show how they help support seafarers.
In two months’ time, on June 25, the Day of the Seafarer 2017 will be celebrated across the globe under the theme ‘Seafarers Matter’.
The IMO is already supporting the day by promoting several initiatives to engage the people working in ports and seafarer centres.
A Twitter hashtag #SeafarersMatter has been set up and the IMO is also launching a new Day of the Seafarer logo (see below).
IMO stated: “The Day of the Seafarer logo seeks to celebrate those people working in the industry, making it clear that seafaring is inclusive and a career at sea is suitable for both men and women.”
An interactive world map is also being launched which will feature the best port and seafarer centres from around the world to highlight best practices in seafarer support and welfare.
The IMO's quiz will also be back this year, with some new questions, together with its virtual photowall.
Lim said: “It’s easy for seafarers to feel lonely and isolated, to imagine that they don’t matter.
“For the 2017 campaign, we want to engage with ports to show their support for seafarers in imaginative and interesting ways.”
