Wärtsilä secures contract with Vitol to develop LNG bunkering

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a subsidiary of Wärtsilä Technology Group, has secured a new contract to expand its market leadership in small-scale LNG applications.

Vitol, a multinational energy firm, is building a new 12,500 cubic metre (cbm) LNG bunkering vessel at China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Shipyard.

It will incorporate Wärtsilä’s Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems, which were ordered in Q4 2024.

Wärtsilä’s ability to design, construct, and deliver a comprehensive system, encompassing Boil-Off Gas (BOG) management, integrated fuel delivery, custody transfer, and bunkering transfer systems, played a key role in securing the contract, reported Vitol.

Richie Zhu, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, China, said: “LNG is today an important marine fuel and is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for owners and operators seeking more sustainable fuel options.

“The market for LNG bunkering vessels is increasing in line with this trend, and we have established a leading position in supplying modern and reliable systems that optimise overall cargo handling efficiency for such vessels.”

In November, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions announced it would provide the cargo handling system for a new fully pressurised LPG carrier for Meghna Fresh LPG, a subsidiary of the Bangladeshi Meghna Group.
