Wärtsilä delivers hybrid tech for Dutch vessel fleet
Wärtsilä will deliver hybrid propulsion systems for four new 10,700 deadweight tonnage (DWT) geared tween decker vessels.

The company booked the order in Q1 2025. The ships are being built for Dutch shipowner and maritime service provider Vertom Group.

Each system combines the Wärtsilä 25 medium-speed 4-stroke engine with a hybrid drive train featuring PTO, PTI, and PTH.

This setup improves propulsion efficiency and allows battery-powered sailing without combustion.

The vessel series supports Vertom’s fleet renewal programme and sustainability goals.

The vessels were designed by Groot Ship Design and are being built at Chowgule Shipyards in India.

Eekels Technology, the E-power and drive systems specialist, serves as system integrator. Wärtsilä and Eekels worked closely with Groot to integrate and optimise the hybrid systems in the final design.

Thomas van Meerkerk, Business Development & Innovation, Vertom, said: “The Vertom 10,700 design seamlessly integrates cutting-edge innovation with an economically viable approach, with a strong focus on reducing the carbon footprint.”

Luuk Hijlkema, Senior Sales Manager for Benelux, Wärtsilä Marine, stated: “This combination of solutions represents the latest advances in marine technology, offering both performance and environmental benefits.”

The company will deliver the equipment to Chowgule Shipyards in 2026. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028.

In May, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions secured a contract to supply cargo handling systems for two Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) vessels.
