A video showing a pilot boarding a moving cargo ship has gone viral.

The footage, shot by a drone on April 2, 2018 near the coast of Hailuoto in Finland, captures the moment a pilot decides to make the most of the icy conditions by using a small portable bridge to board the vessel.

Ice 20 inches thick surrounded the 190-metre-long ship, the Tavastland, as it travelled through the shipping route while on its way to Finland’s Port of Oulu.

A pilot is a seafarer with extensive knowledge about a port’s navigational area.

They board a ship as it approaches its port of call to guide the crew through dangerous navigational areas and to advise on the manoeuvring.
