A video released recently by the Port of Antwerp introduces the barge traffic system (BTS) as a solution for container barge operators and container terminal operators.

The BTS allows barge operators to request time slots from terminal operators. Once the terminal operator has received the request, it will then plan container loading and unloading operations using the system and return this back to the barge operators, thus enabling the detection of conflicts in planning and cost savings.

There is also shorter lead times which means that barges can more frequently rotate between inland terminals and the Port of Antwerp.

On the Port of Antwerp’s website, Rudi Fransen, Operations Manager at Inchcape Shipping Services, said: “BTS has done away with communication by phone and fax, much to the relief of our planning department. It’s a transparent, easy-to-use communication channel that has made our activities much simpler.”
