The Port of Helsinki Ltd has published its first sustainability report based on the VSME standard, covering the port’s operations in 2024.
Standardised reporting improves the comparability of the operations of participating companies.
The Port of Helsinki’s operations are under pressure due to the growing expectations of owners, customers and, for example, ship passengers regarding responsible and sustainable operation. At the same time, legal requirements are also becoming stricter.
In 2024, the port prepared for reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The most notable measure was carrying out a double materiality analysis with key stakeholders.
The analysis identified the key sustainability themes relevant to the company’s operations, along with their most significant impacts, key risks and opportunities.
Head of Sustainability & HSEQ Andreas Slotte from the Port of Helsinki, said: “We have long had ambitious sustainability commitments and targets in place, for example regarding carbon emissions, and have reported on them annually in accordance with our own practices.
“However, we are now adopting a new way of presenting existing information in accordance with the VSME standard.”

“Since then, there has been some uncertainty about the final scope of CSRD reporting and, on the other hand, there was the adoption of the voluntary VSME standard, which allows SMEs to report on their sustainability status and objectives,” Slotte added.
“While waiting for clarification, we decided to implement expanded voluntary reporting for Port of Helsinki Ltd in accordance with the VSME standard.”
The report concerning 2024 published now serves as groundwork and preparation for the presentation of sustainability figures for the current year.
The report concerns the parent company Port of Helsinki Ltd, but the aim is to eventually extend the reporting to cover the whole group.
Earlier this summer, the Port of Helsinki and YIT Infra Oy signed a €28 million ($32 million) agreement to expand the southern end of West Harbour.
