The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) has announced that Ukrainian seaports, in 2018, have exceeded the volume of cargo handled during the same eleven month period of 2017.
Despite rising political tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which culminated in the blockade of shipping channels, ports in the Azov Sea and Black Sea continue to work in regular mode.
In addition to this, Head of the USPA Raivis Veckagans has asserted that the introduction of martial law in Ukraine did not affect operational activities at the nation’s ports.

However, the USPA has revealed that the current situation will affect the cost of goods transportation from the Ukrainian ports on the Azov Sea.
During the second half of 2018, Ukrainian seaports have managed to reduce the 3% lag in transhipment volumes experienced in 2017, exceeding the previous year’s figures by 0.6%.
According to a statement by Veckagans, this was achieved due to the increased efficiency of grain transportation by rail.

Veckagans also commented on plans for the future of Ukrainian ports: “The USPA, in turn, continues to invest in the development of these ports.
“By the end of next year, we plan to bring the depths in the ports of Berdiansk and Mariupol to the passport depths. Another dredger will be transferred there after the repair.
“Also, in Mariupol, the investment project on the reconstruction of berth No. 4, and the construction of a new grain terminal in conjunction with Mariupol Commercial Sea Port, is continuing.”
