In 2018, Aidrivers was awarded a contract by PSA Singapore (PSA) to integrate AI-enabled autonomous technology into some of their terminal trucks for trials, as part of automation of terminal operations in Singapore. The project has progressed well – the retrofitted trucks were first trialled at PSA’s Tanjong Pagar Terminal and later transferred to Pasir Panjang Terminal for further trials under more robust operating conditions.

The following year in 2019, Aidrivers was also awarded a contract by PSA to retrofit their quay cranes with AI-enabled autonomous technology. The project aims to use AI-enabled solutions to automate container handling at PSA’s Pasir Panjang Terminal. Powered by Aidrivers’ autonomous technology, one quay crane was converted and underwent extensive trials to perform automated operations, with encouraging results.

London-based Aidrivers, which designs, develops and delivers AI-enabled autonomous technology and integrated self-aware solutions for port operations globally, was awarded both projects by PSA, following an international tender.

The autonomous truck project kicked off with the conversion of two diesel terminal trucks to fully autonomous vehicles, equipped with Aidrivers’ in-house developed autonomous technology. A key feature of the PSA project is the use of Aidrivers’ autonomous simulation and digital twinning, which is used for environmental analysis and preparation. This approach enables the complex systems to be tried, tested and adapted for safe deployment in a mixed traffic environment, with zero downtime.

Dr Rafiq Swash, CEO of Aidrivers, said: “Our unique approach for effective implementation and deployment of autonomous automation with a true cognitive capability enables the autonomous trucks at PSA Pasir Panjang Terminal to operate in a robust environment with heavy traffic conditions. Similarly, the innovative Aidrivers’ approach to automation delivers the cognitive abilities and intelligence required for the automated quay cranes to handle container with precision. At Aidrivers, we are well aware of the industry requirements for system reliability, availability, scalability and safety – hence our multisensory technology is designed to ensure safety and to meet the industry’s needs in complex port operations. Our vision is delivering zero waste and zero downtime.”

“The most competitive and sustainable ports of the future will be those that make the most of cutting-edge technologies to deliver autonomy with flexibility and adaptability. Ports that innovate early with effective forward-compatible architecture will lead the field on productivity, safety, cost-competitiveness, operational resilience and decarbonisation. PSA is a great example of a port operator that is clearly committed to innovations and making the most of serious AI and autonomous technologies”, added Dr Swash.
