A new deep-sea port currently under construction in Trat Khlong Yai district in eastern Thailand is expected to be completed by next July.
The port is designed to support growing international trade between Thailand and Cambodia and will cost around US$41 million to build.
It will have a capacity to hold 500 gross tons of cargo and will be equipped with a new 3,000m pier that will accommodate more boats, and hopefully, attract more tourism to the islands of Koh Kut and Koh Mak.
The port is also expected to take over excess cargo from ships travelling to the other two port islands as they do not have enough capacity to absorb the US$400-470 billion in shipments each year.
Chatchai Suriya-amporn, a project manager at contractor Italian-Thai Development Co said: “The project is more than half complete but still 15% behind schedule. However, it will be finished by next July as planned.”
