Data released by import-export gurus Zepol Corporation shows the top 10 ports in the US for transhipment cargo.
Below is a list of the biggest transhipment hubs in the US:
Canada has transhipped more than 329,000 TEU transhipped here in the year to date. This is in fact 15% lower than the same period as 2014.
During a time when ports are expected to handle large amounts of cargo, transhipment is becoming more important to deal with these volumes and thereby effectively handle the surge in global commerce.
Paul Rasmussen, CEO of Zepol Corporation, said: “Tacoma and Seattle ports account for the majority of U.S. transshipments, which isn't too surprising due to their proximity to Canada, where most of these shipments are traveling to. Though this year, transshipments to Seattle and Tacoma are down 3% compared to last year [Jan-Aug 12th YTD]. This could be due to shippers finding more direct routes to Canada, rather than a line that stops in the U.S. first, since transshipments to Canada through the Seattle-Tacoma ports are down 16%.”
