The Mission to Seafarers raises $1.85 million in aid of seafarer welfare.
The Mission to Seafarers (MtS) has successfully concluded its second Adventure Race Japan (ARJ) fundraising challenge, raising a total of $1.85 million through over 100 team registrations, corporate sponsorships, and participant fundraising initiatives.

MtS has surpassed its fundraising target of $1.7 million by $150,000, achieving a total increase of $550,000 compared to its 2023 results.

The Mission included 35 sponsors, including its Platinum sponsor, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and prominent Gold sponsors – Swire Bulk, Swire Shipping, NYK Line, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, V.Group, NorthStandard and Arrow, who between them raised more than $500,000.

Held from 15 -18 May 2025 on Japan’s scenic Izu Peninsula, the ARJ event brought together participants from around the world. Over 100 teams representing 26 countries participated to raise critical funds for seafarers’ welfare worldwide.

The funds raised through ARJ will directly support several key areas of The Mission to Seafarers’ global operations. Funds are allocated to a range of projects across the world, both existing and new developments.

Jan Webber, MtS Director of Development, commented: “This event was a great opportunity to bring together the global shipping community, and I was glad to see so many brands across the industry represented. It’s a great microcosm of our industry, with owners, operators, insurers, agents, class societies, flag states, and many more service providers taking part.

“Combined, we estimate that those in attendance represented 55 per cent of the world’s tonnage in varying degrees and, by extension, close to 1 million seafarers.”

Earlier this year, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Lloyd’s Register OneOcean (LROO) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) of the Republic of the Philippines Department of Transportation signed a landmark joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot the integration of seafarer certification systems and develop a new mobile app.
