Thales to Secure Qatar’s $7bn Port

Thales, a French defence services firm has won an order to secure Qatar’s US$7bn New Doha Port which includes the implementation of an intrusion detection system, perimeter lighting and surveillance system and video surveillance.

Qatar recently announced that it had awarded contracts to construct its ‘New Doha Port Project’ that would see total annual capacity rising to around two million TEU.

In Arabian Business, Marc Darmon, Executive Vice-President of Secure Communications and Information Systems at Thales, said: “We are very pleased to be appointed to design and implement the security solution of the New Port, an integral part of the 'Qatar National Vision 2030' strategy.”

The US Coast Guard has recently announced a plan to secure 3,600 US seaports using cyber technology.

There are also concerns that container ships could be at threat after a British anti-terrorism organisation seized a document belonging to the Islamic State which outlined its intentions to cause havoc for shippers.
