The fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia, the Suez Canal, came under threat recently as 13 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested on suspicion of planting bombs along the canal, according to gCaptain.

The bombs were said to be planted around beaches, electrical facilities and sanitation areas. A member of the Suez Canal Authority was said to be involved in the scheme.

Despite attempts made by the Brotherhood to plant bombs around the Suez Canal, it has said that it is ‘committed to peaceful activism’ to reverse a military takeover after Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a former army chief, ousted then Egyptian president Mursi, and then went on to become elected president.

The Egyptian government has regarded the Brotherhood as a terrorist group since the assassination of the country’s top prosecutor.

The 13 men responsible for planting the bombs around the canal have since been detained and can be held for up to 15 days without charge.

An August deadline has recently been announced for the opening of the expanded Suez Canal, which has cost a total of around US$8 billion and is set to open six months ahead of its rival, the Panama Canal.
