An oil spill clean-up operation is underway at the Port of Rotterdam after a 37,499 dwt chemical tanker punctured its hull while mooring, releasing about 217 tons of heavy fuel oil (HFO) from its fuel tank on June 23.

Odfjell, the management company in charge of the ‘Bow Jubail’ vessel, said that its crew took immediate actions to limit the spill, and that the leakage has stopped with no risk of further spills.

The incident happened at approximately 13:40 local time.

Bow Jubail immediately mobilized its Emergency Response Team at the headquarters in Bergen to support internal and external resources in bringing the situation under control.

P&I Club Gard, which insures the vessel, has also mobilized resources.

The vessel did not carry any cargo at the time of the incident, and there are no personnel injuries.

Odfjell has moored Bow Jubail at the Botlek terminal.

A statement made by Odfjell on  June 23 said: “Odfjell regrets the unfortunate incident and takes this matter very seriously.

“Together with GARD, Odfjell cooperates closely with Dutch Authorities to ensure that necessary resources are available in taking the required actions and mitigate consequences of the oil spill.

“We have established an Incident Investigation Team to identify the root courses.

“The team will also cooperate with the Authorities to establish relevant facts.”
