Bromma, the Stockholm-based crane spreader manufacturer, has reported a strong start to 2014 with its first quarter order intake up 20 percent over last year.

In a statement, the Swedish firm said that the mix of yard spreaders and STS spreaders indicates that a significant amount of replacement business for existing STS cranes, a trend, according to Bromma, seen throughout most of 2013. The company also saw increased interest in its container weight verification solution with sensors mounted on the spreader twistlocks.

The geographical distribution of Bromma’s first quarter orderbook was in line with market growth predictions with a number of significant orders taken from the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. This included orders from Qatar’s Port of Doha (20 STS45), King Abdullah Port, Saudi Arabia (24 YSX40E), and APMT, Yokohama (6 STS45).

In Europe, substantial orders came from Barcelona’s Tercat (12 YSX45E), APMT Gothenburg (3 STS45 & 3 YSX40E), and Evyapport, Turkey (8 YSX40E). An order for three STS45 and two YSX40E was also received from La Spezia Container Terminal, Italy.

Bromma has also announced that it raised the price of its spreader units in April due to the continued downward pressure on spreader pricing following 2007’s economic crisis.
