duisport, LBC ink MoU for an ammonia and CO₂ terminal
duisport and LBC Tank Terminals Group B.V. (LBC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a new terminal for the handling of ammonia and CO2 in the Port of Duisburg, which is scheduled to start operations by 2030.

With this project, which is to be implemented at Rheinkai Nord in Duisburg-Hochfeld, both companies want to drive the energy transition and support industry in Europe in reducing CO2 emissions.

The planned terminal will serve as a satellite facility for LBC’s flagship project in Vlissingen (Netherlands). LBC is currently developing a large hub for the import, storage and cracking of ammonia there.

The terminal in Duisburg-Hochfeld would create a direct connection between the Netherlands and the Ruhr area, so that customers will be able to obtain ammonia and hydrogen easily and safely in the future.

The plant in Duisburg is to be equipped in such a way that ammonia can be delivered by inland waterway vessel from Vlissingen. A separate infrastructure is planned on site for this purpose, so that ammonia can be cracked on site and hydrogen can be produced.

At the same time, the terminal is to serve as a storage facility for CO2 that comes from industrial processes. The aim is to reduce CO2 later permanently under the seabed (offshore sequestration).

Frank Erkelens, CEO of LBC Tank Terminals, said: “We are looking forward to building a resilient connection between the two locations together with duisport.

“In this way, we are strengthening Europe’s hydrogen and CO2-supply chains. This partnership combines our expertise in logistics and terminal operations and supports European industry in implementing sustainable solutions. This is an important step for growth and decarbonisation in the region.”

The joint project with LBC complements the already known project to build a tank farm at Rheinkai Nord and opens up new possibilities for the handling of the energy sources of the future in the Port of Duisburg. In doing so, we are sending a strong signal for the transformation in North Rhine-Westphalia.”

Last month, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore appointed a consortium led by Keppel Ltd to carry out the next phase of a project exploring low- or zero-carbon ammonia for power generation and bunkering on Jurong Island.
