APM Terminals (APMT) Japan has signed a long-term corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with FPS Inc. to supply renewable electricity to its operations at the Port of Yokohama.
The agreement is expected to reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by around 2.6 ktCO2e annually through the replacement of fossil fuel-based grid electricity with solar-generated power.
Under the 20-year agreement, renewable electricity supply to the Port of Yokohama commenced on 1 April 2026.
The power is sourced from newly developed solar facilities across the Tokyo region with a combined installed capacity of 5.5 megawatts (MW).
According to the company, the generation capacity has been optimised to maximise solar consumption while meeting real-time matching and physical delivery requirements.
Remaining electricity demand will continue to be supplemented through market-based power sources.
The move forms part of A.P. Moller – Maersk’s wider target to source 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2040.
As a physical PPA, the agreement is designed to provide a direct and stable renewable electricity supply to terminal operations while reducing exposure to fluctuations in electricity prices.

“This agreement demonstrates how local actions directly support APM Terminals’ global sustainability commitments while ensuring reliable and responsible energy sourcing solutions. In addition, this PPA makes a tangible contribution to Japan’s Energy Transition by enabling new solar capacity to be added to the national grid, which fully aligns with our decarbonisation priorities.”
The terminal operator said physical PPAs remain a preferred route for reducing emissions linked to electricity consumption, as they support the development of additional renewable generation capacity while delivering power directly into the grid.
The agreement also contributes to Japan’s broader energy transition strategy by increasing the share of renewable electricity supplied to the national grid through newly developed solar assets.
