On June 5 2014, the Board of Directors of La Spezia Container Terminal (Contship Italia Group) and the Board of Directors of Speter approved the merger of the two companies.

Since 1968, Speter, the main multi-purpose terminal operating in La Spezia, has been a break bulk terminal mainly for loading and unloading of forest and mineral products, zirconium, silicon iron, clay, cement, steel, iron products, coils, lead, copper and zinc.

Speter has achieved positive results which have fostered growing expectations in the general cargo and break bulk handling business.

Recent positive results are a consequence of the ongoing programme of investments in organisation, IT and handling equipment.

Cecilia Eckelmann Battistello, president of the Contship Italia Group said: “There are important synergies to be achieved and to strengthen the competitiveness of La Spezia port.”

She added: “The offer of handling and stevedoring services has to provide tailored solutions to compete on the global arena and guarantee the expected return of investment.”

Employing around 150 personnel, Speter’s turnover in 2013 was €19.6 million, while for La Spezia container terminal, with 457 employees, turnover has been in excess of €106 million.
