Spain's Interior Ministry has reported the seizure of nearly nine tons of cocaine hidden in a container with bananas.

The cocaine bust, the largest made by Spanish police and the largest from a container in Europe, was stored among the 1,080 boxes of bananas.

The shipment came from a Colombian company that had loaded 8,740 kilos of the illicit cargo in the Port of Turbo in Colombia.

Six arrests, made in France, Algeciras and Malaga, were the result of three searches and the seizure of two vehicles and a truck.

This important blow to drug trafficking occurs only four months after another operation in Algeciras, where police seized six tons of cocaine, which was then the largest cocaine seizure of the last 18 years.
